Nope, never seen a paxolin back, maybe they were only used for a certain time period and I've just not caught one yet.
 
Yea by 'back' I mean the surround/frame, I don't think I've ever taken a wooden one out with a 'back'
That's right, just a frame with no back which the various types styles of bakelite front screwed onto. An optional paxolin sheet was available which could go behind the frame. I installed three of them in my previous house in 1983 and one in the current home in 1994/5.
The moulded plastic back was available well before the wooden version was withdrawn.
I often saw them mounted on a couple of vertical bits of 1"x1" to provide plenty of cable access.
 
What i really liked about them was the sides were not too high and access to the terminals was easy especially for the 16/25mm tails.
