Hi,

I'm not a home owner. I'm looking for the cheapest way to build my own detached garage. The purpose being to sound proof it for recording.

I'm not tied to any one area of the country, but my partner needs to work. So it would have to be somewhere near plenty of jobs.

I'm looking for advice on - how much should I budget for this, and how should I go about doing it?

Please excuse my ignorance here.. :)

Thanks

not sure on the structure, but to soundproof it you build 2x4 stud wall, fill it with rockwool and use cloth as the inside skin.., no plasterboard..

kills the sound dead..

was working at a college and they did this to one room that they turned into a sound studio for recording and the college radio..

it was earily silent..

Bob:

Need a little more info from you. Are you looking to buy a place and build a studio on it? or just looking to buy/rent some land and live nearby.

The foundations could be cheap and easy or a major groundworks project depending on whereabouts you are in the country.

What size do you need? multiple rooms? Recording a solo flautist or death metal band? Budget? Timescales? personal or commercial usage (ie: will you be renting it out?) etc etc

ColJack:

The 'inside out' wall as it's known, can be of use in some structures, but building a normal stud inner wall and acoustically treating it afterwards will be much more suitable for most applications. The room you describe would kill the 'liveleyness' of an acoustic guitar, for example.
