My Zanussi ovens element packed up a year ago, I had it replaced and I think it may have packed up again. There is power to the cooker, the display lights up, fan & grill work etc, but the oven does not come on when it should.

Is there a way of checking the element is broke before I go and purchase another one? Or is it obviously the element thus rendering my original question a stupid one?

Thanks in advance.

No, it could be the thermostat, but you can test the element for continuity with a multimeter or any other continuity tester.

If you know the rating of the oven (if it only has one element) then you can work out roughly what resistance reading you should be getting.

If not the rating of each individual element will be stamped somewhere on the element, usually on the mounting plate (near the spade connectors).

A 2kW element will have a resistance of somewhere in the region of 26 ohms (providing I've got my maths right), when tested with a multimeter.
