I want to remove this chimney. The surround is obviously much bigger than the stack above. The surround is what needs to go in the short term. Can I remove any of these bricks before having the top taken down? Or is that my most stupid question so far?

And then longer term (couple of years probably), remove the chimney completely to make a larger room.
