chimney stack

hi guys - do the downstairs and upstairs chimney stack have the same flue...or is the upstairs seperate even though it uses the same chimnet stack ?...reason i ask is i want to close the upstairs chimney hole with a vent in it, but have a gas fire installed in the downstairs front room that uses the same chmney stack ? ta

They are separated by what they call feathers board it up.

ta mate, been advised to leave a vent in it , hence the small hole...will put a vent over the hole..
