Hi all. I have taken out an old gas fire and looking to replace it with a solid fuel fire with fireback.

After ripping out the old gas fire I noticed that the chimney has 3 flues (2 small & 1 large hole). Can anyone explain why & if I fit a solid fuel fire would I need to block the 2 small holes up or could I just leave them?

Any advice much appreciated.

I dont know why you have the three holes/flues.

If you smoke test each hole in turn, and observe which, if any, stack terminal the smoke exits from it might tell you something.

It would also help to know how far up the flue any pipe from any hole extends?

The plate or board you see is sealed with fire cement. Leave it alone until you know more about things.

It would be best to get a HETAS chimney sweep on site to give an opinion on the possibility of future flue use. There will be other variables that need taking into account before you change over.
