We have several bits of wood furniture which are finished with a spray-on french polish and from time to time unsightly chips appear. No one of course accepts responsibility for having caused them ;)

Is there any simple way to repair such damage?

You need to work out exactly what the finish is to repair it, there is no such thing as spray on french polish. It could be varnish.

If they are well defined chips it is probably a professional laquer in which case repair will be more difficult, have a search for repairs to guitars and instuments as these are usually laquered.

Thanks. Yes they are well defined, about the size of a match head, where the edge has taken a knock from a vac or something. The finish is high gloss, like french polish, but unfortunately not as durable. My wife says she thinks there is something like a crayon that can be used to make them less obvious. We aren't seeking an invisible repair.

If the furniture is modern era its most likely laquer to get a really good repair you need to dribble in a blob of laquer and then sand it flat bluffing it into the surrounding area with fine sandpaper when dry.

Google techniques for laquer repair on guitars for some guidance.

They may be but they are the crayons that the OPs wife was thinking of and, if the colour matches, will disguise a knock in any material.
