Did anyone read the Chris Evans article in LIVE magazine (part of mail on sunday) going on about his state of the art alarm constantly going off and the various tech/alarm people who have tried to fix it.

Ahh got it.

Typical crass publishing, with some errors. Most likely due to not listening.
Did he mention windows left open and other causes? Nope.

Still should have been sorted on the first visit.

I liked the bit about Moths setting off the alarm and the fella calling him up to ask why his alarm wasnt initialised when he had turned it off because he was so fed up with it

True with the moths !!! :D :D :D

As for the phone call, quite possible. There could be a set time the garage is supposed to be armed at night and they saw it disarmed but not rearmed. Probably a stipulation on behalf of the insurers because of the car collection.

if a moth can set off an alarm surely its not up to the task

An unsealed entry into a PIR can allow an insect to get inside. Then it would look like an elephant to the detector.
Hence sealed optics and other precautions.
A standard PIR with a large insect landing on it could have a similar result.
So we use quad elements and or Dual Techs. Even TDM`s to give sequential detection to minimize false alarms.

Personally I think not all was told and the "engineers" were lacking. As before nothing that could not have been resolved on the first visit after a careful check of the log entries. An environmental check, and of course the detection used.

So to summerise "any" detector can have an issue in certain circumstances, it is down to the designer of the system to take all of the considerations into account for a good detection rate and zero false alarm rate. And a decent installation engineer to see what he can apply from experience.
And there lies another twist to the tale !
