It's always been a problem to keep the glass clean in my shower area. Now cheaply solved, throw away that expensive CILLIT BANG (but not their squirty bottle), fill with Fernox DS 3 scale remover diluted with water, spray on, leave to work, sponge off, works a treat. Small 250g tub of Furnox lasts a life time and much stronger.

Careful, it could damage some surfaces, gold plating, etc.

Once my shower screen is clean, I treat it with RainX... The water flows off much easier and stays clean for longer... I use it on my windows too

DS3 is a buffered acid solution if I remember correctly.

I think a test is in order. As I don't have any DS3 or an old gold plated tap to test, why not someone who has leave the above tap to soak for a week or so and report their findings?

It should not be used with thin gauge or badly corroded aluminium, zinc, galvanised steel, acrylic (e.g. plastic kettles and baths) chromium plated or enamelled surfaces (e.g. baths), concrete and asbestos.

It's inhibited, not buffered. That means it's got stuff in to organically or electrochemically (as in passivating) protect bare metals, leaving it hopefully to go for the oxides (ie the limescale) alone. If it has to be kept away from steel (as in enamelled surfaces, above) it obviously isn't VERY inhibited!

I recently descaled some chrome fittings in spirits of salts, and boy was it strong HCLl!

In this case the fittings were not important so it did not matter if the chrome was effected but they came up lovely. I will have to leave some chrome and gold plated metal in hydrochloric acid overnight to see if it dissolves them. If they survive, I am sure a wipe down with DS3 would be OK?
