Do you mean breeze blocks? Black or dark grey? Were used in the 1950's before lightweight foamed concrete blocks?
I used to find they went very ragged, drilled holes went big. Smudge in the chases with sand and cement mortar. Which is quite good for holding oval conduit, backboxes etc. And you can drill and plug it, or press in plugs before it sets. Spray the hole wet to prevent the cement drying too fast.
