Hi

I have an extension to my current house that is approx 230 sq feet (Internal Measurement). I wish to add a second floor bedroom above the extension. We will be tying into a hip roof in order to add the second level bedroom.

I dug a hole and the foundation is a cinder block wall 4 feet deep with a 4 inch thick footing. I do not know the complete width of the footing however from the cinder block wall out it measures 8.5 inches wide.

I am thinking about bringing in a structural engineer to determine if the footing can support a second level. Before I do this I would like to know if it is even worth the trouble.

thanks

8.5" beyond the face of the wall is quite a 'toe'. This would indicate a wide footing although it would depend upon the positioning of the wall upon the concrete.

However, in the UK there would be a recommended minimum of 9" concrete found's for a two storey building. 4" thick is very lean indeed.
