Hi

I want to build a wall, approx 6 feet in length and only 2 or 3 courses high (coping stone on top). The wall will be built where currently soil is. Was thinking of digging down until firm ground was found, then just adding a mortar base for the footing, probably around 6 inches deep. This will be ok for such a small wall won't it? Or, do I need to add some balast to the mix for the footing?

You may as well just lay your first course directly on the firm ground, and don't bother with 150mm of foundation.

Lay this first course as headers - ie sideways across the trench, and then lay the next course along the centre of these, bonding them so no straight joints
