Hope someone can help, my usual plumbers gone off and got married and can't get a plumber in Thirsk for love nor money!! My toilet is constanttly bringing water into the cistern therefore it's leaking down the overflow. I can see from where the water comes in it has a small crack in the flap so it's not sealing the water off properly once full. Can someone tell me what the water inlet flap thing is called and if you can give me any advice on how to repair (I'm a pretty much hands on kind of girl so will give it a go!!)

Small crack in the flap?? I assume you have a faulty float valve. This needs replacing or repairing (or adjusting lower maybe?)

Plenty of advice/threads on here....check out the FAQ's section. The job is reasonably easy if your hands on....good luck

I believe from what info I have gathered it is the refill valve, the top part which is plastic and seals the inlet is slightly cracked. Would I be able to just get a new top part to replace this or perhaps duck tape or some form of tape adhesive to seal the crack???

No. Ductape won't do. Change the float valve. See FAQ's but in brief....
Cold water off at stop tap (assuming mains fed)
Flush toilet, drain whats left. Undo connection to cold pipe, undo lock nut on bottom of float valve, replace and reverse above.

Otherwise, call a plumber
