I have just got hold of some 3m mild steel bars 30mm wide 10 depth which I want to use as frames for door stops.
They are all covered in a black film which comes off as you touch them. One or two I will prime with red oxide and a top coat of acrylic eggshell but most I just want to clean and keep as they are. I dont want them shiny white just clean, patches and all.
I have tried white spirit and detergent alternatively and they seem clean enough with none of the black come off on my hands as I work with them. Still mainly black but thats no problem.
Just want to check its OK to clean them that way or if there is a better way which could also be used to keep them clean when fitted. Thanks
