I have tried cleaning an old bathroom extractor fan and it will not switch on even though the light comes on. Have I broken it. Is it fused. Will I have to buy a new one and pay somone to fit it as it sounds complicated with the wiring and everything.

Perhaps you have somehow jammed the impeller. Did you remove the front cover to clean? More information required.
