Cleaning Gasket Surfaces

Evening all,

I know there's a few pro mechanics on here so hopefully you can answer a quick question I've got re. cleaning gasket surfaces.

I was always taught that when cleaning up gasket faces only to use a sharp blade in a scraper or scotch brite pads to clean the metal faces of an engine or component.

When watching videos on YouTube I'm seeing more and more mechanics use a wire wheel in a drill to clean mating faces, is this acceptable now or are a new generation of mechanics just been taught wrong?

Depends on the type of gasket. Something's like sumps etc rely on sealant only and mild scratches can be effective.

But for conventional surfaces, especially with a physical gasket, then smooth is right

Never, on aluminium!
