cleaning old red brickwork

I am looking to clean up the brickwork on the front of my house .The bricks are soft, red ,but they have a black sooty appearence.Its worse where the flat roof porch was,so i presume this is rain damage .I lightly sanded one ,which worked fine ,and ive also heard about rubbing one brick against the brickwork .Is this ok, or will it damage the brickwork?
