Cleaning parquet floor

I have an oak-block parquet floor. Each block is about 2" by 8" and they are laid in 'herringbone' fashion. The floor now needs cleaning and (ideally) the varnish removing before being re-varnished. I'm told that floor sanders are not appropriate for parquet and indeed definately not appropriate for parquet laid in 'herringbone'. So how do I clean it ? Can someone please advise me?
