Cleaning the radiator system !!

Ive just taken two radiators off the wall whilst decorating in a room downstairs . Both the radiators were filled with black gunk !! Can someone advise me on cleaning the whole system once ive put the rads back on !! Will it affect the efficiency of the central heating system if i just put them back on and dont clean ??
