Hi All,

Question - can someone advise of an oil based varnish that doesn't darken the wood very much?

Looking for some quick advice. I recently bought new oak veneer doors which came with a lovely raw light wood colour. The manufacturing advised to use an oil based varnish and mentioned this item - ronseal--ultratough-matt-coat-clear-varnish.ronseal--ultratough-matt-coat-clear-varnish

When I applied this varnish the wood of some doors went a funny dark yellow/red colour..they still look ok but considerably different. I did expect some darkening but not as much. I have only applied one coat so far and with a rub down of steel wool they lighten up ok.....however reluctant to put another coat of this varnish on.

Question is whether someone can advise of an oil based varnish that doesn't darken the wood much?

Thanks

Oak has a light pinkish colour when freshly cut and dried. Over time UV turns it more of a yellow. An alternative to varnish would have been a clear wax, or a danish oil, but its probably too late now.
