Hi everyone,
Hoping to get some advice please. Bought a brand new light fitting and the cables are unmarked. One obvious green and yellow Earth on the light fitting itself, but three other wires that are clear with 2 slight colour indicators. One appears to have a yellow thread running through, another has white and the third one has none. Any ideas which is Live Neutral and Earth? I'm guessing yellow is Earth?
Thanks!

Don't guess with electrics. If wrong someone could be killed. Not having the wires correctly identified makes that item illegal to sell. Take/send it back as unfit for purpose.
Better still take it to trading standards. Let them deal with the retailer.

I don't have a multimeter and whilst I can do basic wiring and hang a light fitting, this seems a bit much so I'll have to get an electrician in. Hopefully an electrician can figure it out? If not, I'll send it back. Kichler is a well known brand. It was £200 so not that cheap. Surprised this has happened.

Hold on I should have read instructions. This may shed some light.

Those instructions appear to be written for the North American market, where the voltage is 120V.
Where did this light come from? Is it even suitable for use in the UK on 230V?

Hold on I should have read instructions. This may shed some light.

They appear to be instructions for installing the lamp in America.

House wiring in America uses Black for Live and White for Neutral

The mention of Red refers to those houses which have 2 phase supplied, Phase 1 is Blacke and Phase 2 is Red, Neutral is White.

It came with two leaflets. I got it from Ebay from a UK seller that sells light fittings. This is also available from Wayfair UK. Seems to be branded Kichler then rebranded Elstead.

At this point I'm probably not going to try fitting this myself. Will see if an electrician can - that's if it's even suitable for use in the UK.

Ok Flameport, I know, yes us peasants like to save their pennies and buy from eBay - it's insufferable.
Anyway, it's from a UK Ebay seller called Brightstore. Shall I just send it back? They're a business seller.

NO, it's fine. TLC direct even sell those.

Just buy a multimeter. You know which one is the earth, with the stripe. I would still check it with the meter however.
And, as they are Edison screw lamps, you ought to find out which is the live and neutral, despite it would work either way around.

Ok as long as it's suitable I'll keep it and get a multimeter. Thank you!
