I have an R reg clio and it seems as though the handbrake is stuck on, the handbrake itself releases in the car but the brake is still on when you try to drive either forwards or backwards. I have been told its a matter of just giving the drums a bit of a whack with a hammer to free the mechanism does anyone know exactly what to do......cheers anyone

May help, but what is the cause of them sticking on?

Seized cable? Leaking wheel cylinder? Worn shoes? Broken mechanism?

I'd be taking the drums off and inspecting and cleaning inside rather than relying on a hammer which may in fact damage a drum

Dont know what the problem is you see, the cable and handbrake itself seems to be working and clicking up as normal.

If the cylinder is leeking what would you do for that.

Would worn shoes make it stick on.

Thanks for your reply jbigboy by the way

Worn shoes could very well be to blame.

Get underneath the vehicle and inspect the cables and visible linkage, both sides while a colleague operates lever inside car. (Leave in gear and chock front wheels while doing this). If everything is moving, get the drums off and have a proper look.

Leave your hammer in your toolbox.
