Why do all new washing machines use only cold water without giving us the option of both hot & cold. The argument that they save energy by only heat the water required is OK if you use normal gas & electric for all water heating, but I have a Stanley Oilfired cooker/boiler that provides cooking, hot water and heating. This means that whenever the cooker is used we have a cylinder full of hot water free, so I object to have to pay for electricity to heat additional water to the washing machine. This is another of the nanny state's rulings to save energy and take away our choice, but that is another way of hitting the country dwellers who have no mains gas.

Malatron. Your hot water is never free. I know it seems a shame to waste the water from your Aga. However even with lagged pipes there is frequently waste of "hot water" before it reaches the washing machine. With washing machines using cooler and cooler washes it appears simpler and more energy efficient to heat up only that water in the washing machine plus in these days of bean counters it is one item less on the parts list when constructing the machine.

l agree, l'm belng forced to heat by electrlc, when my gas ls a lot cheaper, consldered swoppln the plpe over, gettlng rlnsed ln warm water, ls tere a lot of dlfference ln that.???

You could, if there is a hot tap near to w/m, the tap to be above the level of w/m detergent drawer - use a supplementary hot water fill - utilising a rubber tube and a funnel.

When machines are hot & cold fill & the machine calls for hot water, in most houses you will get a gallon or so of cold water from the pipe.
My hot water in the kitchen takes about 5 gallons to come through. (boiler in loft)

Alot of Hot/Cold fill machines only filled with hot water during very hot washes ie 50 degrees and over

All other washes were cold fill and heated the water in the drum (alot of immersion and gas heaters were set to heat the water to 60 degrees in the tank)

The only way of really ensuring you do not waste the hot water from and Aga/Rayburn (which I have) is by the old twintubs or top loaders that you used to fill by hand each time (we repair quite a few of these for people with rayburn/aga/solar heating as like me they have hot water constantly available 'rayburn runs 24/7 doing my heating/hot water/cooking')
