I hope someone out there can help. I am in the process of fitting a solid fuel Rayburn Supreme to replace our old oil fired Aga in the kitchen. This will be an open vented system with 28mm gravity feed to HW tank and 22mm pumped to rads, with an injector "T" in the return to the Rayburn.
My problem is how to connect in the original trianco 15/19 oil boiler so that in the rare event the oil boiler is on, the Rayburn will assist it.
As I don't want the Gravity fed hot water on the trianco, I am planning on removing the 28mm pipes and re-routing to the Rayburn, and sealing these ports on the trianco. I am going to retain pumped system for c.h.
My queries are these:

1 At the present time the gravity h.w pipes are on the LH side of the trianco boiler and c.h. on the RH, after removing the 28mm h.w. pipes should I re-route the c.h. pipes to be flow, top RH, return, bottom LH or does it make little difference?
2: The pump is next to the trianco and I was planning on fitting a separate pump next to the Rayburn........do they need to next to the boilers & would fitting these pumps, say in the airing cupboard be o.k.? or cause problems?.......could I just use 1 pump and a 3 port valve.?
I will need to add a new feed/expansion to the trianco....can this be a single pipe from the boiler side of the pump, separating at the F&E tank?

This is a difficult senario to manage correctly and most importantly SAFELY.

I cannot follow your words and think most pros would have the same problem.

If you can draw a plan of what you propose then someone might offer suggestions.

However, I would always advise an experience heating engineer to attend site!

Hi Tony....sorry to cause confusion.....I'm basically an industrial automation eng....electrics no prob, but not so good with pipes!!!('')

To try and clarify, the Rayburn will be bog standard gravity H.W. and pumped C.H. as per Rayburn drawings.

I would like to be able to connect in the Trianco boiler to the C.H. rads should we run out of wood/coal and in the unlikely event that we can afford to buy some heating oil.

hold up there.

Join the 21st century man. Gravity fed hot water.
Rayburn!

This is nonsense. Get a modern cooker and modern condensing oil boiler.
While you are at it replace what I expect to be an aging hot water tank
with a modern fast recovery tank. Remove central heating header tank
from loft and go for a sealed system.

Eerrr thanks dcawkwell......but this does'nt really help...We live in rural Wales on a smallholding.....in winter an Aga or Rayburn in the kitchen is very welcoming when coming in cold and wet from sorting out the livestock.......we also have 28 acres of mixed woodland.
In case you're not aware, heating oil suppliers, unlike Gas and Electricity have no regulating body regarding pricing, in spite of over 3 million oil users in rural areas where mains gas is unavailable in ...it was demonstrated in the cold winter last year that pricing becomes a free for all with oil costing over a £1 per litre and causing hardship to many people.
So a modern cooker is not the answer, and yes a multifuel stove is hard work but at least it gives some freedom from being ripped off.

Well if you must.
The best method I would suggest would be a thermal store.
Both rayburn and oil boiler will have their own pump.
Both will feed a twin coil thermal store. A pump from the thermal store
drives the central heating. The thermal store provides mains pressure hot
water. Either rayburn or oil boiler or both can heat the house.

Look at pages 19, 26 and 27 which show a few mechanical layouts using a system link manifold.

Also have a look at other neutralizer link up methods........

Also similar to your set up and in Wales...

The H3,H4 and H5 were later developments afaik.
Lots of ideas and schematics in there including unvented cylinder connection and system separation using a plate heat exchanger.

Also have a look at the interlink system on Page 18-Fig22.

Which uses straegically placed nrv's to prevent backflow without the use of neutralizers or header systems.

Hang on, this is rural Wales!

He probably gets his water from a well !

In the middle of the night he has to get up, put on his waterproofs ( its always raining in Wales ) and walk to the Ty Bach at the bottom of the garden singing "The green green grass of home" !
