Coming out of your time

How many remember when you came out of your time? It was a common thing in my day for the gaffer to sack a lad when he came out of his time to avoid paying full money and then start another kid as an apprentice on low money.
When I came out of my time the full rate was 5 shillings an hour for 44 hours and if you were any good the gaffer would give you a tanner an hour on top of the rate, happy days??

Came out of my time after 5 hard years and still learning every day!
Went through the usual 'greasing' which is no longer allowed.
Rate as an improver apprentice, (final year), was £22-50p, just changed to decimal.
Only got sacked if you were no good or average. Then your place was taken by a new appo. (I was kept on, ).
