Last weekend we built a concrete base for our 1800L heating oil tank.
The following will sound like serious overkill, but then our time is free.
We formed a shutter ( using MDF ) against the corner of a concrete wall. The shuttering measured approximately 2800mm x 1500mm.
The shuttering was around 600mm deep so we stacked a selection of old concrete blocks and concrete coping stones into the corner, to fill the space, leaving an a gap right around the perimeter of approximately 160mm to 200mm.
We placed 7mm steel reinforcing mesh around the perimeter standing up on edge and then poured 4:1 ( ballast to cement ) concrete mix to encase the mesh and so reinforce the edge of the concrete base.
We then placed another layer of 7mm mesh right across the top and poured a minimum of 100mm of 4:1 concrete mix on top.
So my questions :
1. As the concrete blocks and concrete coping stones were stacked dry is there a chance that they could move under the concrete encapsulation causing the concrete to crack ?
The mesh across the top lay on top of the concrete blocks that we had stacked inside the shuttering and so it was not as completely encapsulated in concrete as we would have liked.
2. Is there any chance that the construction could fail when the 1800L heating oil tank is filled up to maximum ?
