I plan to lay a path in a passage, between two terraced houese.I understand that I must accommodate expansion and need something to separate path from walls.Timber is one solution built have seen bricklayers use a plastic expanded material designed for job.Any thoughts please?

The "Old School" was to use Fiberboard with a thin timber fillet above the board, the timber was removed and the gap where the timber was can be filled with a suitable mastic.

You are over-thinking it. There is no expansion of any discernible amount with an external path.
