An electrician has been to do a job when it transipired that the earth was connected to my water mains but not the gas pipes. I was told that it has to be done and I am all for upgrading my electricity up to regulation. How much should I expect to be charged for it?
If the gas meter is adjacent to the consumer unit, then not a lot. You could probably do it yourself in 10 minutes.
If the consumer unit is at the front and the gas at the back of a terraced house built on concrete with laminate flooring throughout, then a significant amount of money.
It's not an 'upgrade' either, but an essential safety feature which has been required for decades.

The consumer unit are both at the front of the house. the consumer unit is just inside the front door and the gas meter is just outside it. So what's 'not a lot'?
and a length of this http://www.screwfix.com/prods/30011/
between the clamp and the main earth terminal, which should either be inside the consumer unit, or a separate metal block fixed near the meter.

I don't know what the charge for the additional earthing is yet. I agreed for this to be done because I was told it was.essential. The electrician couldn't say how much it'll.be. His manger is.due to call me to settle the bill. Should I be charged a minimum of 1 hour labour even of this was an extra on top of a fairly big job?
Bearing in mind that it will be bonded to the gas pipe inside the house (where the pipework froim the meter enters)
If it's a short run from where the gas pipe enters to the CU then you shouldn't be charged very much for it. Prices in London might be more than up here though. What job did you have done and how much were you charged for that? (or did you have work done with no idea of the price to be charged )
