converting tile steps into concrete steps

Hi guys,

I've got some old steps in my garden that I want to renovate. I'd like to have concrete steps, then possibly lay slabs on top later. I'm not entirely sure what the old steps are made from, it looks like lots of concrete(?) tiles or roof tiles cemented together like a big sandwich. They are all broken up and cracked, but structurally they seem to hold weight fine.

I have no idea whats underneath as they are built into part of a larger brick structure. Can I just concrete over the top of them, or will I need to knock it all down and start again?

there are no rules to say you cannot use the existing steps as 'carcassing' for your new steps, provided they are sound and that the risers tally in with the new format - particularly at the top.

it is important also that treads and risers are equal.

when bedding any new slabs make sure they are solid bedded with no voids as not to trap any moisture and give a more robust job.

thanks for that. I thought it'd probably be ok, but I wanted to check. Its a relief that I didn't have to knock it all down! Would have been really awkward
