Hi all. I'm looking to convert a large window at the back of our house into a doorway. The window is on the back external wall leading to the garden. I don't want to change the size of the opening, just cut out the bottom part of the walll under the window (approx 0.5 metre high). Do you know if I would need any form of planning/building consent for this?

cheers.

No. But make sure that when the bottom half is cut away, that any debris is removed from the cavity, to prevent possible damp. Also make good by closing the cavity below, from the inner leaf to the external leaf, and continue a verical dpc between the both

there are laws, in new build, governing glass and floor area, stating a percentage of one against the other ( because glass, windows, doors etc, loose heat at a far greater rate than cavity wall, then b.c. don't want you to have too much of it). as its only a small increase, and its existing, you're probably well within the parameters anyway.
