My friend has a cooker socket (control unit) which will not be in use anymore. I believe it is 4mm that is coming into the control unit.

Can he lead 2.5mm cable from the control unit so he can add some more sockets to the kitchen. Is this ok or will there be complications arising from this. There will be 4mm coming in but 2.5mm coming out. There is a 45 amp fuse in the consumer unit.

He would like to use this control unit without completely rewiring from consumer unit.

Any help appreciated.

45A on 4mm is completely wrong anyway - you'd need at least 10mm for that (possibly more depending on the route the cable takes)!

If it really is 45A on 4mm, then that circuit should be isolated immediately until it can be rectified in some way, as there is inadequate protection for the cable, so in the event of a fault it could overheat, and catch fire...

Thanks for the reply.

It proberly is not 4mm, he obviously has the size wrong.

So i guess he would have to change the fuse to 32 amp and rewire fron the consumer unit in 2.5mm.

My friend says that the new cooker is just plugged into a normal socket, so he does not need the control unit anymore. Has he got the info right.

Is it a gas cooker?
It might be possible to add another ring final circuit but this will also require RCD protection and notified to the LABC under part p. Best bet for that is to look for an electrician who can self certify and let them do the work.

My friend has checked the consumer unit (old consumer unit).

He has 2x5amp (lights) 1x16(water heater i assume), and 3x30 amps.
One of the 30 amps must be for the cooker.

He is getting an eye level oven, this will be the one that uses an ordinary plug.
His cooker is actually gas.

Does any of this info help.

No, still wrong.
32 amp > 4mm or 6mm, depending on distance.
20 amp > 2.5mm or 4mm, depending on distance.
16 amp > 2.5mm

Depends on the rating of the "cooker" do you mean cooker, oven or hob? They are different appliances and have different installation methods. The difference is critical.
