Core drilling

Hi All

Looking on some advice as to what drill to use for core drilling, have 3 110mm holes and 2 45mm holes through a double thick brick wall to do.

My Erbauer 5kg SDS plus drills clutch packed up and no longer can drill though the chiselling still works perfectly.

Looking at the Hitachi DH28PC but will this work well to drill the the above ok?

Just now I was trying to use a 15 year old Bosch drill with torque control but though it was circa £200 in its day the torque does not seem to work properly anymore. It either on too low and does not spin, or a little higher and it catchs without the torque working or you have the torque to high and its dangerous (just starting with the smaller hole).

So the question is will the Hitachi drill the holes, or do I get a something like the Bosch GBH 2400 and hope the Erbauer does not break down completely. Both have safty clutches opposed to torque or are modern torque controls better and can be used for core drilling?

Any pointers / advice would be appreciated.

Have you considered hiring a suitable drill? Could work out cheaper as you only have the 5 holes to drill. Also when core drilling, don't be tempted to use the hammer action.

thanks, did consider the hiring option but need a SDS + in any event as has a lot of SDS + bits.

Yep know about the hammer action. A plumber I used a few years back used a drill similar to the bosch above.

Not sure if to opt for the cheaper version or get the Hitachi to replace my current SDS +.

Does anyone know if either will be up to the job?

for a 4 inch core i doubt the bosch will be up to it. prob need 3kgh at least

Hi,

I bought the Bosch 'blue' 710 or 760W SDS specifically for core driliing. Cost around £130.. I do not do cores every wk so thought this was a well priced option. According to the manufacturers gumph it can do up to 65mm cores. I found it coped OK doing 110mm cores. It can get a lil hot occasionally so I would do the inner course of brick then leave it to 'chill' for 30 mins before doing outer course. Done quite a few cores with it now and still going strong.

Obviously make sure it has a clutch.

Got the Hitachi DH28PC for £209 delivered in the end (£299 at Screwfix), first impressions is it looks very small but seems to pack a good punch!

Not sure of model number. It is a blue Bosch, there are two available around that price/wattage, I got the bigger one of the two.

Good call re Screwfix, can normally always find cheaper elsewhere. Hope the Hitachi is a good un.
