Am building an extension with a Lean to roof pitch angle of 16 degrees, Architect has specified roof tile to match existing. The existing tile is a flat concrete interlocking tile and assume the architect sped'ed it from an asthetics viewpoint. However when I look at the specs for different tiles they all have a minimum pitch angle the lowest pitch angle for the flat concrete tiles is 22.5 degrees. When I did some research there is a Marley tile called Marley Wessex which has a minimum pitch of 15 degrees which I can possibly get (think they have one Irish supplier). What I really want to know is ? do I have the option of going with the flat tile that matches the existing roof tile if I put in a serious overlap or should I get the Marley Wessx hopefully in a similar shade ? Can anyone tell me what features in a tile define its minimum pitch is it something to do with the smoothness of the surface finish or is it related to additives within its concrete ? All advice much appreciated.

The minimum pitch and differing headlaps are to do with the capiliary action of water, the lower the pitch the more likely water will track back under the laps, remember of course that the pitch of the roof tile will be somewhat less than the pitch of the rafter.

You could use a Redland Cambrian which is an interlocking reconstituted slate at that pitch but of course it's not a cheap option (relative to concrete).

Unless you want to use Onduline (a corrugated bitumen sheet that acts as a secondary waterproofing layers) below the flat tiles the Marley Wessex may be your best option.

Thanks for the info I think I will go with the Marley Wessex even though they seem to be double the price of a standard tile. Better to be safe than sorry. Can I just ask you what the best practice is with the tile clips Is every third row enough to tile clip along with all verges and around all velux windows ?

just be careful with the wessex, they can lose their corners (bottom right)very easily.

lay 'em and keep off 'em. ;)

You'd need to contact Marley technical for that information, you can go through their website and get a fixing specification online for no cost.
