My boiler needs replacing and I've received an estimate of £1800 to replace it with a Worcester Bosch 300cDi.

Is this an opportunity to replace the system with a ground source heat pump?

The property is 3 bed detached with 2 bathrooms and a garden large enough for either trenches or bore holes.

Any idea how the costs compare, or am I dreaming?

Probably around £8,000. And it is best to have low temperature underfloor heating, depending on how much heat is available. Ground is better than sourced.

You may reduce the cost by doing most of it yourself. Digging trenches and laying the slinkies will save a lot of money.

However. A condensing boiler and £6,000 spent on draft-proofing, insulation and a solar DHW setup will most probably be financially more cost effective.
