Can anyone explain how these cousin things work i.e what relation is my cousin's children to my children etc.

What exactly is a 2nd cousin too? :?

I've still got a headache

Family tree showing the relationship of each person to the orange person. Cousins are colored green, while the grey and white stripes signify different generations.

Should this be in the 'Norfolk family' forum?

no mum, sister and granny are all the same person on that one

and wife?

I was tracked down by a second cousin, for some reason my mum's family had not spoken to her cousin or aunts for 40 years or so and I had no idea they existed.

To the tune of the adams family:

Yer sister is ya mother
Yer father is ya brother
You all **** one another

(add you own finger clicks for effect)

As it happens I found three cousins via genes re-united...from my fathers side.

I knew I had them and tried to trace them a few times...really nice speaking to them and finding out they are more or less the same tpye of people as me (poor *******s!!)

Bahco -
I think I understand how it works. It goes like this - You and Paul are first cousins. Paul's son (Peter) is second cousin to your son (John). When Peter and John have children, these children will be third cousins to each other.

You are a first cousin once removed to Peter, as Paul is to John. And so it goes on. First, second, third cousins (etc) are on the same step of the ladder (i.e. generation) as each other. When cousin(s) are on different steps to each other the once/twice removed come into play.

I think that is right but I am open to correction !

You from Norfolk :?: That`s where my ancestors are from .The F family are prolific there...but not too many in Sussex  Well, if you guess....I`ll just come back as Foftuf.seeing as the maestro is quiet.......But ever watching 8)

I might have it.

Your uncle/aunt's children are your (first) cousins. Their offspring would be your cousins once removed and their offspring your cousins twice removed and so on.

Your uncle/aunt's cousins would be your second cousin and their offspring would be second cousin once removed and so on.

Your uncle/aunt's second cousins are your third cousins

That doesn't make it any easier, does it?

I've seen the word "cousin" that many times it no longer looks like a word! Does anyone else get this?
