I have this morning found out that my manhole cover may have been convered by a conservatory that was built on my house!!!! NIGHTMARE!

We are having some more work done on the house (kitchen being extended in line with the extension) and thought that the builder would find the manhole in the process. He has not and when we looked through some old plans that the previous owners left it seems to indicate that the manhole is underneath the conservatory which has since been concreted over.

I am at a complete loss as to what to do! The builder has said that it will cost 10K to take the structure down, dig the foundations, find the manhole and move it into the garden! Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do in this nightmare situation!

It could be that the manhole was converted to a solid piped connection.

Can you install new drains around the conservatory and then connect them into existing and abandon the drians under the conservatory.

You can have manholes (Actually an inspection chamber - manholes are much bigger) inside - I believe they are double sealed.

I guess if they concreted over teh camber lid they also did not protect the drains properly where the foundations cross them

You could ask the local arceological society if they have geophis equipment and then do a search for the pipe outside the conservatory, dig down and put in a new fitting. Save digging up the conservatory.
Best of luck.

Thanks everyone.

Still haven't quite worked out the answer but we are working on it!

If you can get to either end of the pipe you could get a CCTV survey done to check if the manhole is still there.
