I was wondering if anyone has tackled this, covering an uneven stone steps (cellar/basement) with wood, any techniques to get them all straight?

Two difficulties immediately present:
You will be changing the rise to tread ratio - although old cellar steps were often at haywire ratios.
Any method of fixing the treads must be foolproof.
Personally, i should leave them as they are - if you are converting the cellar then come back with pics of the steps.
