South Africa, which is testing and monitoring, has had 89,574 deaths. That is a lot for a population of 59.31 million.

Just because we are not seeing the deaths in other African counties, does not mean they are not happening (a discussion about flu looks into this). Many people die in Africa without any proper record of reason of death, and influenza has been ignored for decades.

I bet if you go out to Africa and speak to people in hospitals and morgues you'll find that people are indeed dying.

The AP admits that the case of Africa is too significant to ignore, noting the fact that it by and large managed to escape seeing a deep impact by the pandemic, leaving scientists and health experts baffled:

But there is something "mysterious" going on in Africa that is puzzling scientists, said Wafaa El-Sadr, chair of global health at Columbia University. "Africa doesn’t have the vaccines and the resources to fight COVID-19 that they have in Europe and the U.S., but somehow they seem to be doing better," she said.

Fewer than 6% of people in Africa are vaccinated. For months, the WHO has described Africa as "one of the least affected regions in the world" in its weekly pandemic reports.
