hi/ last week my rcd tripped for some reason and when iwent to switch the mcb;s back on i heard a strange crackling noise coming from what appeared to be the main fuse . the rcd hasnt tripped since but can any one explain this worrying noise?

Is it still crackling?
When you say the main fuse do you mean the Incommer cut out fuse supplied by your regional electricity company? Is it still crackling?
If so you need to ring them up and get them to come out and repair the fault as soon as possible. It sounds like a loose / bad connection. Be sure that it is the REC fuse before you call them out as they will charge you if it is not a fault with their equipment. If it is not the REC fuse then get an electrician to find and rectify the fault. In the mean time try to use as little load as possible on the installation.

the crackling noise was only heard when i flipped the mcb,s back on and then after a while it stopped, and it was definatley coming from the rec main fuse.i have had no problems so far so could it be a loose connection .

If you are hearing crackling noises coming from the rec main fuse it is important to get them out asap to fix it, it is likely a loose connection but they are the only people who are authorised to work on it. If left unrepaired it can pose a fire risk.

thanks all, ill get onto electricity company straight away!
