Hi, I’m currently in the process for of replacing 9 rads in our house (5 on the ground floor and 4 on the first floor). I believe these were fitted when the house was built in the early 80s. Behind each of the radiators on the first floor, there is a large crack in the wall, see pics below. I’m not sure how deep these run. There are none on the ground floor.

Is this common?
Is it likely to be just the plaster that is cracked or could this be structural?
Should I mend these before I fit the rads? How?

Thanks.

Are they on external walls and is there any sign of cracking on the other side?

All on external walls, no cracks on other side (but it’s a standard cavity wall, so I wouldn’t expect any).

Again, nothing on ground floor (also external walls).

Internal cracks can appear where different type of plastering has been carried out e.g. plasterboard next to solid plaster, or where an opening has been bricked up. You can often tell by tapping the plaster whether it is at the point of breaking off.

Difficult to tell from the pics if it's structural, doubt it, but not possible to tell from the pics alone.
