Hello all!
I went for lunch today at my local westherspoons, the John Fairweather in Cambuslang, Glasgow. It's built inside a place that was once a theatre, annd so it has lavish decoration which is utterly beautiful

I'm engaged in redecorating a bedroom right now, on a solar theme, and i've been looking for inspiration. When i looked up inside that place, i saw it! They have this stunningly beautiful sunburst design on the ceiling, see pictures below.
It is a very far away ceiling, so i couldn't get close enough to examine it, and the staff of the place didn't know the construction details. My best bet is that its made of either moulded plaster or scrap metal

I want this thing! or something like it. Since i'm decorating an interior bedroom, i desire a much smaller version of it, of course, probably with a radius of 50-75cm. But i'd like to build it around the ceiling light in the centre of the room

The only problem is, i have an approximate budget of peanuts. Realistically i can scrounge together a few quid here and there, but this is a shoestring project if i do it at all.
Luckily, i have tons of tools, lots of gold spray paint, and adhesive cartridges to stick things up. The ceiling is plasterboard so it can't take too much weight.

What i'm asking here is for thoughts on the materials that i should use, and the method of constructing it,

Maybe this is a pipe dream. I'm certain that i want it. Far from certain that i can, or will, actually do it. But if folks have any ideas that make it seem like a feasible and affordable project, please do share

What are your skills like?
I’d suggest metal is a poor choice due to weight.

You could carve something out of clay or air dry clay, in negative, and cast it in Jesmonite with an internal reinforcement?
Or cast sections of jesmonite to assemble your design.

If you have the means, you could cut sections of wood/plastic slightly tapered in order to create the burst? Go for light wood.

Worst case, buy a starburst/sunburst mirror from an antique shop and remove the mirror, fill in the centre and spray gold or use gold leaf

Lurk at the council dump and snag a busted venetian blind? Or two - some of them have narrower slatty things.
Hot melt glue,....

Or use a roll of 1200 lining paper., cut into appropriate shapes and ironed into folds. Spray it with weak pva and it'll hold its shape.
Maybe use 2 layers, at slightly different bend widths so the shorter narrower-bend more central one sits on top of the one underneath.

Or you could so a Sputnik based ball with a bulb inside and the trailing aerials it had, with LEDs on the ends.

my skills are whatever they need to be, i learn as i go, and every project is a chance to improve

although right now, not great in terms of carpentry :P i do a lot of general DIY though and i can cope with most things

Cutting sections of wood and plastic sounds ideal. In fact, looking closely at one of the pictures there, this thing might possibly be made of hollow plastic tubes cut at odd angles. (more likely metal though, given the age of it)

jesmonite i've never heard of, but ill look into that

This embellishment thing, is this your own business? I respect the hustle, but i see no prices on everything in there, which means i definitely can't afford it !

And the sunburst mirror seems like a great idea, but i did a lil research. At the size i'm wanting, the price of a mirror scales up way too much to be within my budget

scrap wood or plastic sounds like the ticket though, just gotta source some, ill keep an eye out on skips
