crumbling mortar

Hi all, Just took off some of the rendering on the chimney and the mortar underneath is very sandy/crumbling badly in some places (more so at the top), and some bricks are coming loose also.
So just wanted to ask is this gonna be a serious problem or is it a case of repointing?? Also the chimney will be re-rendered anyway so would re pointing be necessary? You can see the damage in the pics below:

1. What state are your flues in? Flash a light down. If all looks degraded then its decision time - do you re-build or re-render?
2. Are the flues active or redundant? Is a gas liner present? Will it be worth having the flues swept?
3. You will probably have to re-do the flaunching and re-set your pots and terminals - i say this because your stack looks old.
4. When you re-render, the lead flashing must be taken into account - perhaps replaced or reworked?
5. Any loose or perished bricks remove and point in fresh.
6. I'd rake out to 20mm and quickly point up 10mm depth, and then float the render into the tacky pointing.
You should work from a fixed ladder, a roof ladder, and some kind of c/stack scaffold.
Two people on the job at all times.

I've just noticed that you posted about this stack business a few days ago - and people responded, then why haven't you kept to your original post? I find this kind of thing annoying.
