CU change

customer wants a new consumer unit
old one is BS3036 type fuses

tested before i fitted new one and found IR
to be lower than allowed

customer aware and doesnt want to pay for
other work, just the new fuse board because
it will be better than what is there

can i do this work legally?

is an EIC required to change a CU if all the earthing and
bonding are up to regs?

is it not like for like?

as im aware, any defects are required to be put right
before an EIC can be issued

Replacing the Consumer Unit is notifiable to your local building control department under Part "P" of the Building Regulations in England & Wales

yea i know its notifiable and having thought about
it for a few minutes i realised that of course it
wont be like for like because changing 3036 fuses
to mcb's changes the characteristics of the system.

so do i tell the customer that i cant do the work as
i cannot legally issue an EIC without rectifying
the faults that he has?

It is your name on the EIC. What would happen if a circuit you have worked on and know to have bad IR caused a fire or electric shock?


How low was the reading?

it was in the region of 0.2 meg ohms

Any IR reading less than 0.5Mohms is a fail and any reading less than 2Mohms should be investigated, so your circuit which reads 0.2Mohms should be disconnected until the fault is fixed
