I have a car port with quite brittle plastic transparent sheeting due to age and UV.(bit like me !) I need to take a piece out from below to enable me to insert a hatch for easy access to branches etc. in the future. I have tried cutting old sheeting before and it tends to shatter. Is there a good safe way to do this, I am only talking about maybe one cut 2' long OTA.

i would seriously consider buying some new sheets once they go brittle they will last but a short time
with a cat jumping or a strong wind within a year causing cracks and leaks and disintegration :D
failing that if you have an of cut or spare sheet try and fully support underneath as it could be so so brittle so will need support to stop it shattering

new sheets i use an angle grinder old sheets i use a dremmel, NEVER use a saw.

That's very interesting, I have a dremel, we are talking about using the right sort of bit ??

It is possible to cut old brittle sheets with an angle grinder but only use the very tip of the blade and go s-l-o-w-l-y.
