Damp smell behind bathroom sink

In the wetroom of a council rented flat. The smell comes from the hole where the sink trap goes through. It's a damp, organic, rotten wood smell.

I sprayed some bleach solution inside, but because the gap is small I couldn't spray it very far.

What would be the best way to treat this and stop the smell from coming out?

Thanks.

OP,
Assuming that you intend to DIY the job then:

Dont "rip out" anything - you could be held responsible for any damage - its never good advice to go blindly ripping stuff out.
And besides its much easier to investigate if you loosen both compression nuts & swing the trap out of the way - & then cut the paint seals to the hardboard(?), & unscrew any fixings and/or gently prise the nailed-on panel away from some sort of backing framing.

Doing the job this way allows you to easily put things back in one piece.
When you have it open then why not post a pic of whats been exposed?
