Damp stains

Renovating an old stone cottage. The render on this wall is still stained from previous damp issues. I have used the stain paint cover a handful of times but the stains keep coming through. When I bought the cottage the wall was painted red - now I know why! Lol.

Any advice to cover this up finally? Thanks.
 
You will have to bite the bullet, & hack off to background masonry, then take pics and post them on here.
Is that an external wall - if so is the outside rendered?
