We (my fiancee and I) are in the process of buying our first property and on our final review of the house we lifted up the carpet and found some discolouration on the floorboards.

Do you think this looks like damp and would you recommend us having a full structural survey?

Personally I think thats just residue left over from age old underlay.....but damp detectors are readily available from Toolstation etc.
John :)

Whatever you do, don't buy a damp meter and go poking it around, as you wont know how to interpret the readings. It will show moisture, and it will typically be normal, but then you will think that there is a damp problem

There is nothing seemingly wrong with those floorboards

Whether you have a building survey or not is another matter. Bear in mind that a structural survey is not a building survey. Also, building surveys may not check for damp and may just refer you to a damp "specialist" for another survey. And then you could have the worthless Homebuyer Survey which takes the worst from all surveys and combines it in one report
