There are 3 common methods, amongst others

1) a Bitumen or similar membrane system like this: http://www.riw.co.uk/applications/internal_tanking.htm
2) a Cavity Drain membrane system like this: http://www.newton-membranes.co.uk/services/services.aspx?serviceType=1&id=48&catID=3
3) Waterproof Render (not that I think much of that method personally) like this: http://www.safeguardeurope.com/applications/basement_waterproofing.php

It would maybe more useful if your question was specific.
