David Davis could resign today.......

disagreement over customs union.

Maybe followed by a leadership challenge

His departure will create a vacancy for another ambitious Village Idiot hoping to further his career.

DD wants to resign from the cabinet (but keep all the advantages of being in the cabinet). He wants the pay, to be part of government decision making, wants the diplomatic car, the prestige, the expenses, but he does not want to accept reassignment to another post, nor will he accept collective cabinet responsibility.
He is now threatening to resign, but only after an implementation phase, while he looks for another post.
He even wants to discuss the details of another post and complete the recruitment process during this implementation phase.

He has sent a letter of intent to resign, but has not actually resigned yet.

It appears the cabinet is split on whether to accept his letter of intent/resignation.
Some are even saying the implementation phase of his resignation should be time limited, but there is much disagreement about that.

He should've been an MEP then, they get great pensions and leaving salary.......

We now have a backstop, as described by UK, that will not be acceptable to EU.
This is a twist, turn, duck and dive attempt after the Xmas agreement to a backstop.
A backstop is there in case nothing else is arranged to avoid it.
You cannot have a backstop that will cease to exist as a backstop just because UK cannot sort out the problem.
It will simply not be acceptable.

They can have a suggested date by which they hope to be able to avoid the backstop, by having a proper working solution. But you cannot put a time limit on a backstop.
The backstop is there until it is not needed, not until one side unilaterally decides they no longer want it.

the end date is probably planned to coincide with a general election.
