well three core is just that - three cables within an outer sheath.
T&E (Twin and Earth) is two cables plus an earth within an outer sheath.
Three Core and Earth is what is normally meant - three cables plus earth within an outer sheath.
I suppose it depends upon where you heard the reference to three core wire.

If it's SWA it means just that - 3 cores, usually for Live, Neutral and Earth.
if its SWA 3 core means 3 cores
3 core SWA is really intended for 3 phase no neutral systems (hence why it has the colors it does)
however many people don't like to rely on the armour for earthing and so they use 3 core on single phase and use a core as earth
with flex (and flex like cables) 3 core means there are 3 cores of identical construction one of which is color coded for earth
house wiring cable should never be decribed as two core or three core its twin and earth or three and earth

If it is flat cable you are talking about, then "3 core" cable has a bare earth conductor (or cpc) and is technically known as 6243Y.
3 core and earth (as opposed to twin & earth).
Left is twin and earth, or 2 core and earth.
Right is 3 core and earth.
These are pre-harmonised colours, but still the most common type to find.
Lectrician - your bit of T/E looks a bit battered - my guess is that the cores have been bent/unbent/rebent a few times - I'd cut the end off before using it, if I were you...

I think I have identified the items fairly accurately.
Please note, not a single screwdriver or pair of cutters.
Sadly he didn't make it past his 3 months probation. It made me wonder how good an electrician his dad is.
As I see it, a core is simply an insulated conductor within a cable.
This does not include bare wires (bare cpc).
So a 3 core SWA consists of a brown, a black and a grey; plus the bare armour.
A 3 core and earth consists of a brown, a black and a grey, plus bare cpc. Cable types are regular flat cable and fp cable.
A 3 core flex, however, typically consists of a brown, a blue and a green/yellow.
